Since
Guam is a small island, the people continued to use villages instead of cities
and towns. They also kept the name of the villages such as Dededo, Yigo, Tamuning,
Tumon, Harmon, Mangilao, Barrigada, Mongmong-Toto-Maite, Chalan-Pago-Ordot,
Yona and much more. The two largest villages of Guam are Dedeo and Yigo which
are both located on the North East and North West part of the island. Dedeo has
44,943 overall population and Yigo with a 20,539 population.
Both
locations are not as dangerous as the southern part of Guam. They both consist
of many nationalities for Guam is a diverse island. Dededo and Yigo are both
residential areas but Yigo contains one of the military bases on the island.
Most military personnels can either choose to live on base or to live in the
neighborhood or the closest village. The distance between these two villages is
only a 10 to 20 minute drive depending on the traffic. One can also go around
the island in just a couple of hours but if you want to sight see and really
experience the area then it will take you an entire day.
The
people of Guam are usually friendly to tourists and non-locals. Many who are
new to the island will receive an island greeting as the locals say “Hafa Adai”
meaning “Hello” or “Welcome.”
